A Magic… Pen!? Use the 3Doodler Create+ to Draw in 3 Dimensions!
What if 3D printing could be as simple as doodling a picture?
Because that’s exactly what the 3Doodler Create+ does! This nifty piece of cutting-edge tech (fun for both kids AND adults!) brings the power of 3D printing into your hands. Just like a magic pen.
How’s it work? Well, while the 3Doodler may look like a regular pen, albeit perhaps on the chunky side, there’s no ink. Instead, the pen extrudes a heated, malleable plastic that hardens rapidly upon expulsion to create the three-dimensional drawings and projects of your imagination. And with this, the world is your canvas!
Draw three-dimensional objects; draw your wildest dreams. Create shapes, art, and diagrams. Repair and MacGyver your way through life. You can even design accessories and other wearable objects. There really is no limit.
But wait, there’s more! What could possibly be more than infinite possibilities? How about an included comprehensive guidebook to kickstart your 3D doodling adventure!
Truthfully, the extra out-of-box support for this product blows a lot of other gadgets out of the water. Alongside the included activity book and extra sets of plastic filaments for hours of drawing fun, there’s a whole host of other filament types and colours for purchase, accessories for the 3Doodler Create+ to mix up the magic (including more guidebooks for some truly insane projects), and a slew of FREE online resources for new designs and doodling techniques.
The 3Doodler Create+ is one gadget that does not disappoint on value. It does exactly what it says on the box: enables three-dimensional artistry and all the educational and creative licence that offers. Furthermore, it does this exceedingly well.
But more than that, it goes above and beyond, offering a wealth of content to teach any doodler how to create and create more with this pen. The 3Doodler Create+ exists at that wonderful little intersection between magic and science, and the kid inside all of us will love the entertainment of this product.
But really, kids will adore this gadget. It’s a magic pen! It offers endless hours of creativity-fuelled education. An activity that is equally building an understanding of maths and science while also fuelling the artistic pursuit.
But ultimately, all of that is just secondary to the true wonder of this fine gadget: you had me at “magic pen”.

Drawbacks
- No one said 3D drawing was easy. There’s a real trick to using this pen; practice makes perfect. Personally, I wouldn’t call a challenging learning curve “a drawback” but I thought it was worth mentioning.
- The pen can be prone to jamming, however, cleaning and maintaining the gadget deftly handles these concerns.
- Drawing with the attached cable can be cumbersome at certain angles or in certain workspaces.
- The nozzle of the pen is the section that heats up to melt the plastic. If you’re not careful, you might give yourself a little singe!
Our Final Opinion on this Gadget
The 3Doodler Create+ is the exact kind of whizz-bang gadgetry I would have loved as a kid. It doesn’t replace all other art supplies but rather it adds to that growing pool of creative tools.
Any kids that are interested in 3D printing, modelling, or small feats of incredible miniature engineering will get torrents of edutainment out of this magic pen. Similarly, any artistically-driven kids will similarly get so much value out of bringing their creative fire into a whole new dimension. And that merging of the two disciplines is where the 3Doodler Create+ shines.
It’s a safe product, it’s an innovative product, and it’s a crazy clever product! If you’re looking for a cheaper or simpler alternative to the rabbit hole of 3D printing, the 3Doodler is the solution. Or if you’re just looking for a quirky and fun present that offers a whole new way to create, this gadget equally meets that sweet spot too.
But really, it’s a magic pen. The only people that WOULDN’T get a kick out of it are people who don’t like fun. And wizards.
Enjoy your magic pen; you’re a wizard now, Harry.
FAQ
As mentioned, the pen melts a plastic filament inside as it protrudes which then quickly re-solidifies upon touching the paper or having contact with the air. Specifically, the nozzle heats up and melts the filament as it comes out. There are even different nozzles you can buy to experiment with different styles and textures of the filament post-extrusion.
Absolutely! The nozzle itself heats up as the plastic filament protrudes and it’s advised to avoid contact with that area or the plastic as soon as it emerges (think about candle wax in the moments before it cools and hardens). Furthermore, all plastics used in the 3Doodler process have undergone full toxicological risk assessments as well as tests for heavy metals and it’s passed all of them with flying colours! The risks associated with the 3Doodler Create+ are minimal, however, the 3Doodler Start+ and Build & Play models are actually intended for very young audiences so as a result, the plastic and nozzle temperatures never exceed warm.
The 3Doodler works with a wide selection of different types of filaments. ABS and PLA are the most popular choices enabling a versatile variety of drawing styles. However, there are some other really cool choices including wood filaments (that can be sanded once dry), flexy-style rubberised plastic that stays flexible after hardening, and metal and nylon filaments for different applications.
No – only 3mm Doodler-branded plastic strands are intended for use with this product. However, I have seen personal accounts online of people DIYing their own plastic filaments to fit this product with varying levels of success (and more than likely at the expense of your warranty).
